
Saarland is a state located in southwestern Germany. It is the smallest state by area and second smallest state by population in Germany, with an area of 2,570.01 square kilometers and a population of approximately one million people. The state’s capital is Saarbrücken, and its official language is German.
Saarland was formed in 1957 when the Saar Protectorate, a region that had been under French occupation after World War II, voted to join the Federal Republic of Germany. Today, Saarland is known for its strong economy, which is largely based on industry, particularly in the fields of steel production, automotive manufacturing, and information technology. The state is also home to several universities and research institutions, including Saarland University and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics.
